4 awarded highest IU alumni honor for achievements

The Distinguished Alumni Service Award, the highest honor alumni can receive, is given out annually. For 2012, the IU Alumni Association chose four alumni.

Cora Smith Breckenridge

Breckenridge obtained a bachelor of science in speech and hearing therapy in 1959 and a master of science in education in 1963.

She had a career as a speech, language and hearing pathologist and later became the first African-American to serve on the IU Board of Trustees.

She is currently membership chair of the Elkhart County chapter of the IU Alumni Assocation. She was formerly a member of the National Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, president of the Elkhart County NAACP and member of the IU Alumni Association Executive Council.

Richard Enberg

Enberg obtained a master of science in health and safety in 1959 and a doctorate in health and safety in 1962.

Enberg went on to have a career in broadcasting, specifically working in the sports field. He has won 14 Emmy awards and has been inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

He has worked for the IU Sports Network, Los Angeles Rams, California Angels and University of California, Los Angeles.

Curtis Simic

Simic obtained a bachelor of science in physical education in 1964. He retired in 2008 after more than 40 years of work in development at public and private institutions of higher learning. He was also involved with the IU Foundation for 20 years.

Other recognitions Simic has received are IU’s University Medal and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Paul Tash

Tash graduated in 1976 with a bachelor of arts in journalism and political
science.

He is currently chairman and chief executive officer of the Times Publishing Company and chairman of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

He is also a member of the boards of the Pulitzer Prizes, Associated Press and Newspaper Association of America. He has also served as chair of the School of Journalism advisory board.
