Freshman Julian Eisner, 20, died Friday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Julia May, a friend of the Eisner family who was acting as their spokesperson, said the cause of death was inconclusive. Family members told her that the initial toxicology report did not indicate that Eisner had been using drugs or alcohol, May said.
Eisner was a resident of Curry Hall, located in Read Center.
IU police and emergency medical personnel arrived at Read Center at around 1 a.m. Friday on reports of a resident having what appeared to be a seizure outside one of the doors, Mark Land, associate vice president for university communication said via email. They found Eisner lying on the ground and unable to breathe.
They performed CPR and transported Eisner to the hospital, Land said. IUPD Chief Keith Cash said Eisner was revived at the hospital but died later Friday afternoon.
"Losing someone so young is tragic," Land said. "Our hearts and thoughts go out to Julian's family and friends."
IUPD and the Coroner's office are continuing to investigate the death and Land said he cannot comment on cause of death at this time.
Eisner was a 2011 graduate of Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa. Some who knew Eisner described him as a lover of music and an avid drummer. Eisner was a member of his high school's basketball and track and field teams, as well as a member of the school's Outdoor Education and Jewish clubs, according to the Mercersburg Academy website.
Eisner was also a contributor to the Indiana Daily Student's local music blog LiveBuzz.
Geoffrey Kerbis, Delta Chi public relations chair, released a statement about the death of Eisner, who was a former pledge member for the fraternity. Kerbis said that Eisner had been a part of the fall pledge class, but was no longer a member.
"We are very sad to hear about his passing, and his family and friends will be in our prayers," he said.
IU has made counseling services available through the IU Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services. Those who would like help can contact CAPS at 812-855-5711 to make an appointment.
In lieu of flowers, the Eisner family asked that donations be made in Julian Eisner's name to the Mercersburg Academy Alumni and Development Office in Mercersburg, Pa. Those interested in donating should call 800-588-2550.
