MovieFest to screen films

There are two types of people at every movie: those who stand up immediately and exit the theater once the film is complete and those who remain in their seats, watching until the last credit rolls off the screen.

On Monday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, hundreds of IU students will be inducted into the elusive third group: those whose names scroll on the screen, giving them credit for a restless week of labor and production.

Participants in the 11th annual Campus MovieFest have been given a week to create a film no longer than five minutes.

Started in 2001 by Emory University students David Roemer and Dan Costa, the festival is nationwide and provides Apple laptops, Panasonic HD camcorders and free training to all students involved during production.

At the conclusion of the contest each campus has a screening at which the top movies are showcased. Students in the Business Careers in Entertainment Club have taken advantage of all the contest has to offer. Chelsea Connors, codirector of the club, accepted the challenge of creating the film and said she was excited about how closely the contest correlates with BCEC’s goals.

“We meet each Wednesday where we watch trailers of movies that will be released soon,” she said. “Then we move on to profiling filmmakers and sometimes end our meeting with Scene-It.”

When the contest was introduced at a meeting, 25 members stepped forward to help create the film.

During the past week they’ve collaborated throughout 12 hours of filming.
Jon Corum, a telecommunications major who helped to produce the project, said the film was not completed without challenges.

“For me, scheduling was most difficult,” Corum said. “I had a hard time not being able to make it to all of the pre-production meetings. It just comes down to getting your priorities straight. I learned that I need to get better with time management for future projects.”

Despite his difficulties with finding time to complete his project, Corum encouraged those who would like to see their name in the credits.

“Make a film no matter what excuse is holding you back,” he said. “You’ll be glad you were a part of Campus MovieFest.”
