No serious injuries were reported in Wednesday’s car crash outside of Forest Quad, IU Police Chief Keith Cash said. The driver and all three passengers are IU students.
The driver, Yuantong Yang, 19, and the front passenger, Ziwei Wang, 19, were transported to the hospital. Yang was taken to the hospital after a complaint of head and neck pain. Wang was taken for a complaint of head pain.
Yang and Wang were both released from the hospital after being treated Wednesday night.
Passengers Li Yuantong, 19, and Guan Yichen, 19, were treated for minor injuries and released from the scene.
“The vehicle, a Volkswagen SUV, carrying the three males and one female was turning onto the Forest Circle from Third Street,” Cash said. “Instead of hitting the break, they hit the accelerator. After the vehicle accelerated, the driver lost control.”
The vehicle struck the limestone wall that outlines the Forest Circle facing Third Street, Cash said. The initial assessment of damage to the wall is $5,000.
Yang was issued a citation for operating his unlicensed vehicle. There was no alcohol involved in the crash, Cash said.
After the accident, the left front tire of the vehicle tore away. The vehicle then rolled over on its side where it rested.
“All of the airbags in the vehicle deployed,” Cash said. “All four occupants were able to exit the vehicle with assistance from a pizza delivery driver who was on the circle and witnessed the accident.”
