IU's low rank on Trojan Condom's sexual health list is misleading

Sexual health

Trojan Condoms recently released its annual Sexual Health Report Card, and IU dropped more than 20 spots. In related news, Trojan Condoms apparently releases sexual health report cards.

IU ranked 39th in the highly anticipated 2010 ranking, but we slipped to 63rd in the 2011 report. IU fell in the rankings not because we had a bad year, but because other schools made vast improvements.

However, Bert Sterling, the study’s research leader, did point out one weakness at IU: our lack of anonymous columns in the IDS. I guess he must have completely disregarded the fact that IU’s Kinsey Institute runs a column in the IDS.

And it must not be good enough that the institute, in addition to its columns, also posts information on www.kinseyconfidential.org. Students can navigate the site to find podcasts, Q&As and blog posts from sexual health experts.

Trojan’s ranking was created through a survey among 141 college health centers. Each health center was surveyed and scored on 13 criteria. However, the ranking didn’t take into account that the IU Health Center, the HPER school and Kinsey Institute also play big roles in the school’s sexual health.

That’s like dubbing a baseball team champion for their bullpen. Um, hello Trojan Condoms, we have a lineup and starting rotation, too. But then again, Sterling lost all credibility when he sandwiched the University of Illinois between Columbia and Princeton atop the 2011 ranking.

Seriously, what is the University of Illinois doing between those schools? The only thing they have in common is their amount of NCAA basketball championships (hint: 0).

Mr. Sterling, I apologize that we will not put Bootydrop in our student newspaper, but that’s no reason to drop us in your Trojan rankings for sexual health. But to end on a good note, Purdue dropped from 19th to 64th on the list. Not only has Purdue been keeping ugly girls out of IU since 1869, it’s keeping more STDs out, too.
