Countless organizations, both local and national, serve those in need in Monroe County. In this series, the IDS will spotlight a group of people who do the tough, tedious work to make that service happen — the directors of these charitable organizations.
WHAT HE DOES
Since 2006, Jeff Baldwin has directed the three Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington. Each day, the clubs serve more than 330 children, ages 6 to 18.
Through after-school programs, clubs and other services, the club aims to enrich physical, intellectual, educational and social development in Bloomington children.
“This organization provides something that translates into real change in our community,” Baldwin said.
NOTABLE PRAISE
Last year, Mayor Mark Kruzan proclaimed May 15, 2010, to be “Jeff Baldwin Day” in Bloomington.
“Jeff Baldwin inspires everyone around him to be their best,” Kruzan said in the official proclamation. “He is tireless in his quest to provide our children with the best opportunities possible to become productive, caring and responsible adults.”
ON HIS WATCH
During Baldwin’s time as executive director, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington opened a third club in Ellettsville, Ind. The number of children served nearly doubled, and the structure of the club was improved.
“People see the club as something more than just a place to hang out now,” he said.
HIS PERSONAL MISSION
“I’m a big person on self responsibility,” Baldwin said. “I lean in and I lift my share and more, because it is important that this society be preserved so that kids get a chance to experience it, too.”
WHY HE LOVES WORKING WITH CHILDREN
“Kids are wide-eyed and, for the most part, hungry for information, knowledge and direction,” Baldwin said. “You can see the growth and development in them before your very eyes.”
HOW HE WOULD IMPROVE SOCIETY
“Youth development is the place that we should be spending our time — period,” Baldwin said. “We would see a tremendous change in our society.”
WHAT HE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT
“God, certainly,” Baldwin said. “I’m not afraid to say that, either. That’s key to me.”
He also credits the club’s donors, Board and staff for his continued success.
ADVICE TO STUDENTS
“We’ve got major challenges in this country,” Baldwin said. “Your generation is going to be the one where the poop hits the fan. We’re dealing with it now, but you are going to have to find a way to get us through it.”
