Low-budget movies celebrated in festival

The B Movie Celebration will focus on overlooked films Friday to Sunday in Franklin, Ind.

B movies are low-budget films, mostly from the first half of the 20th century that have been overlooked by most people. They first appeared as the lesser-known movie in a double feature, but the tradition has continued.

“The B Movie Celebration’s goal is a simple one: to make film fans and filmmakers aware that there exists a tradition of filmmaking, which is often ignored by the mainstream film industry,” the B Movie Celebration’s website says.

“As Hollywood exists today — in their mind, anyway — there really are only two types of films: the big-budget blockbuster and the independent film,” the website says.

The B Movie Celebration will focus on the other category of films — movies that production companies didn’t spend a lot of money on and aren’t considered art-house films.

The B Movie Celebration will have discounted tickets for film and television students with a valid student ID from universities in Indiana. Most of the films featured in the festival are from the 1960s and 1970s, but there are also several from recent years.

The festival will take place in three movie theaters in Franklin, Ind.
