Law scholars to discuss intellectual property

Five law scholars will speak to the public this fall during the Maurer School of Law’s Center for Intellectual Property Research IP Colloquium.

“This is a colloquium that the law school puts on every year,” said Marshall Leaffer, distinguished scholar in intellectual property law, university fellow and convener of the colloquium.

 “It invites famous scholars from the United States and around the world to present a paper. Our students read the paper and respond to it. The first one was very successful.”

This fall’s colloquium is called “Protecting Intellectual Property: A Global Perspective.”
The speakers’ work will focus on comparative and international copyright law and theory.

Canadian scholars are invited this year to gain an additional perspective, Leaffer said.

“There are a number of very prominent scholars who focus on intellectual property and give a new prospective,” he said.

This year’s colloquium topic can be of interest to different majors, Leaffer said.

“The subject of copyright law is interesting to a lot of people in different fields, because it touches on a lot of things in the digital world,” he said. “The subject transcends international boundaries.”
