National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warning for Monroe County

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Monroe County. The storm is predicted to reach the IU campus by 3:50 p.m.

Large storms are predicted to bring large hail, strong winds, heavy rain and frequent lightening.

The NWS has said that parts of southern Indiana are in part of an area with a high risk of tornadoes.

The NWS only declares a high risk for tornadoes when the threat of tornadoes is especially high and the tornadoes are likely to be strong.

The NWS has declared four high risk days this year across the United States, during each of which at least 40 tornadoes were reported and at least one person died.

The parts of Indiana that are most likely to hit be a strong tornado are located near Evansville, but Bloomington is also in a threatened area.
