The spring move-out of many college students next week has sprouted a 10-day effort by the City of Bloomington to pick up — for free — large items left at the curb.
The City of Bloomington Sanitation Department will pick up large items from May 2-12 as part of the city’s “spring cleanup” promotion.
The cleaning campaign encourages the proper disposal of items as the spring school season ends.
Residents will start moving out of temporary apartments and dormitory housing.
Items qualifying for pickup include grills, mattresses, couches, chairs, other large furniture and household items.
Mayor Mark Kruzan said in a press release that the service will help the city’s core neighborhoods deal with the amount of large items associated with the end of the school year exodus of residents.
As with any city service, certain regulations apply to the pickup of these items.
Items should be placed by the curb no later than 5 a.m. on residents’ regularly scheduled trash pickup days.
Regular household trash and yard waste should still be marked with a city trash sticker.
Any residents who require the disposal of a large appliance should call 812-349-3443 to schedule an appropriate pickup time with the sanitation department.
All propane tanks and gasoline should be removed from discarded grills and power tools to ensure safety during pickup.
