IMU's Tudor Room offers fine dining, ambience

Some might walk right past the Tudor Room restaurant in the Indiana Memorial Union in their caffeine-fueled quest for Starbucks.

However, this restaurant, frequented by visitors, faculty and alumni alike, could be an excellent option for students.

In reality, the Tudor Room is open to everyone, Tudor Room manager Tracy Wright said.

“This is a great place for students to gather and see their professors,” Wright said. “It is a positive experience for both students and faculty.”

The Tudor Room was built as part of the 1958 renovation of the Union, preparator Rand McKamey said.

The theme of uniting faculty and students is evident in the decor of the Tudor Room.

“It was Herman Wells’ vision to emulate the English countryside with the Tudor Room,” McKamey said. “Signs of the schools are represented on the windows as well as by the banners of the schools that hang from the ceiling.”

The intended purpose of the Tudor Room is for more than just the IU students of today.

“This was Herman B Wells’ baby,” Wright said. “He worked hard to create a place for alumni to come back to.”

This elegant atmosphere can be intimidating to some students, freshman Paige Nilles said.

“I didn’t know how to eat there,” Nilles said. “I would probably go if I knew how it works.”

A special 8 dollar student lunch option is available from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It offers students an all-you-can-eat salad and dessert bar as well as a warm buffet.
