District 5 council member will not seek re-election

Isabel Piedmont-Smith, who has served as Bloomington City Council representative for District 5 since January 2008, will not be seeking a second term.

Piedmont-Smith, a Democrat who served as vice president of the council in 2009 and as president in 2010, announced her decision Monday.

“I look forward to having more time to spend with my family,” Piedmont-Smith said. “I have learned a tremendous amount during the past three years on the city council, and I’ve enjoyed serving the residents of Bloomington. I will continue to be involved in community issues through city, county or nonprofit boards, and perhaps I will seek public office again in the future.”

Piedmont-Smith said among her goals for the remainder of her term, which ends Dec. 31 of this year, is an ordinance requiring recycling facilities in new apartment buildings, added incentives and allowances for urban agriculture and stormwater improvements in the Bryan Park neighborhood.
