Retired law professor Baude, 67, dies in home

Maurer School of Law professor emeritus Patrick Baude died at his home Wednesday. Baude, who was 67, retired from the law school in 2008 after teaching there for 40 years, according to his obituary.

After retirement, Baude continued as the Ralph F. Fuchs Professor Emeritus of Law and Public Service and taught courses to first-year students.

He was an extraordinary person and teacher, who taught students to take an idea apart and to improve their thinking, said Maurer School Dean Lauren Robel.

Robel said she had Baude as a professor when she was a student in an equity course and federal jurisdiction course, which she now teaches. She said it was interesting just to be around him and see how his mind worked.

“He had a photographic memory and knew a little about a lot,” Robel said.

Baude earned degrees from the University of Kansas and Harvard University. He also played a role in the state legislation, Robel said.

Robel said Baude’s death is a big loss for the institution and alumni.
