Students staying in Bloomington during the semester break and looking to stay in the residence halls must request special break housing online by 5 p.m. Monday.
A $100 fee will be charged to each student’s bursar account when the reservation is made.
Spaces are limited so students are urged to make arrangements early, said Director for Residential Operations Bob Weith.
“It is always a mystery how many people will sign up because they tend to wait until the last minute,” Weith said. “Right now, there haven’t been many requests, but come Monday there will be dozens more.”
One factor adding to the competition this year is the number of international students on campus.
“The international students are usually the ones who tend to need this housing,” Weith said. “There are a lot more of these students this year so this might impact the number of available spaces.”
Accommodations will typically consist of space in a floor lounge with other students. However, those living in a residence hall with break housing, such as Read Center, will be allowed to stay in their regularly assigned rooms during this time.
“Because we are as full as we are, lounges are the only place we can put students over break,” Weith said.
Specific housing assignments will be e-mailed to students no later than Wednesday.
There will be no desk, food or mail services during the break period. Residence halls open again at 8 a.m. Jan. 5.
