Potterdom is absolutely riddled with villains (pun intended). Here, we rank the most prominent ones in order of overall badassery.
1. Voldemort/Tom Riddle
What other villain in the history of fiction has split his own soul six times, never mind being reincarnated as a scaly red demon baby? Voldemort definitely wins for baddest baddie.
2. Severus Snape
Snape is arguably the most complex character in the series. A double agent in every sense, Snape lives a twisted existence that makes us love and hate him as much as he loves and hates himself.
3. Dolores Umbridge
Stephen King called her the “greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter.” If her vile personality and that damn Inquisitorial Squad didn’t fill you with rage, you’ve got issues.
4. Bellatrix Lestrange
This perverse madwoman is perfectly brought to life by Helena Bonham Carter. Her cackling laugh and crazed expressions make her deliciously creepy and sadistic, even if her character isn’t all that deep.
5. Lucius and Draco Malfoy
The Malfoy boys have got cold, calculating and curb-stomping down pat (and they make being bad look awfully good). Unfortunately, they also tend to wimp out when it’s time for some real action.
6. Peter Pettigrew
This pathetic caricature of a man helps Voldemort come back to corporeal life. While Pettigrew’s mind is weak, his body is apparently able, and he ruins a lot of lives on his way to being Voldy’s right-hand rat.
7. Barty Crouch, Jr.
While being raised by Bartemius Crouch probably wasn’t easy, Barty Jr. is truly a bad egg. Torturing the Longbottoms into insanity and keeping Mad-Eye locked in a trunk? Not cool, man.
8. Rita Skeeter
If her name’s not annoying enough, that Quick-Quotes Quill sure is. Nobody likes bias in the media, and “that vile Skeeter woman” manages to buzz around and put a dark spin on just about everyone.
9. Professor Quirrell
P-P-Professor Quirrell’s only claim to coolness is Voldemort sprouting out of the back of his head. The unraveling of the turban is one of the sickest scenes in Book 1, though, granting Quirrell a place on this list.
10. The Dursleys
While perhaps not truly “evil,” this bigoted family is a real piece of work. Petunia takes her sweet time redeeming herself, and Vernon and Dudley make Harry’s childhood a living hell, making them the least cool villains of the series.
