A quiet protest

Pete Stuttgen

Groups of protesters met at four locations on campus to march to the corner of 10th Street and Fee Lane. They walked down 10th to Woodlawn Avenue then to Seventh Street — all in silence.

The protesters were commemorating the National Day of Silence to bring awareness to those groups who are often silenced for being different, including the GLBT community.

The march ended at Dunn Meadow, where the participants also ended their silence.

During the week before, Doug Bauder, coordinator for GLBT Student Support Services, said about 1,000 t-shirts that read “embracing diversity” were distributed on campus.

“I think sometimes it’s harder to (wear a t-shirt) alone than to walk in a group,” he said in an IDS article.
