Men's golf travels to Illinois Invite

The IU men’s golf team will compete this weekend in the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.

The Hoosiers are coming off a fifth place at a tournament in Zionsville, Ind. last weekend and look to improve against the toughest field they will face all season.

“I really like the team going to Olympia Fields,” IU coach Mike Mayer said.  “It is without a doubt our strongest field of the year. I haven’t looked at it but I suspect you’ll see eight or nine of the top ten teams in the country there.”

The field includes Golf World’s No. 1-ranked team, Oklahoma State. No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Augusta State and five other top 20 schools will also be competing.

“We focused on several specific drills, primarily to challenge the team to better handle adversity. We struggled with that last weekend, and we want to see who can handle it,” Mayer said.

The Hoosiers will field a lineup of junior captains Chase Wright and David Erdy, along with sophomores Corey Ziodinis and Brant Peapers and freshman David Mills, who is coming off his collegiate debut last weekend.

“David Mills is not afraid of anything out there. If I see at Olympia fields anything what I saw at Wolf Run I have no worries about Mills,” Mayer said. “He is as about mature a golfer at that age as I’ve seen.”
