'Jonah Hex'

jonah

Release Date: June 18
Starring:
Josh Brolin, Megan Fox

Based on the comic of the same name, “Jonah Hex” is the story of a Confederate soldier-turned-bounty hunter in the Old West. His face scarred and his family killed, and he begins the inevitable quest for revenge.

The comic is a great Western, a perfect example of the genre. The movie (at least what the trailer shows) could not be farther from it.

Apparently, the movie studio heard “comic book movie” and forgot about the whole “Western” part, because the trailer feels like a mash-up of “Wild Wild West” and “Constantine.” That is not a good sign.

There are pros and cons to consider. Josh Brolin as the scarred bounty hunter Hex is a huge asset, given his performance in “No Country for Old Men.” Megan Fox plays some sort of love interest, which is a minus for me, given that she’s never done anything that could be called a performance. (Brolin is also about 20 years her senior — creepy.)

Leave it to Hollywood to take a property that could have been the best Western since “Unforgiven” and decide that the main character needs some superpowers, a love interest played by a hot actress who can’t act and a bunch of crazy steam-punk weapons. (A dynamite crossbow? Really?) Maybe someone will do a decent reboot in a few years, sticking to the gritty Western aspects without all the wacky adventure.
