Racy, risky and edgy. Those were the words used by Usher himself to describe his new album, “Raymond v. Raymond.” More appropriate words could not have been used. From start to finish this album sounds more experimental than any of Usher’s previous efforts. The fruit of his labor is a treat to the ears with very few flaws.
With Usher’s recent divorce from wife Tameka Foster, I expected this album to have the depressing undertones of “Confessions.” However, every beat in this album is uplifting with lyrics reminiscent of the fun and exciting Usher so many fans came to love.
“Raymond” features a number of great guest appearances, including rappers Plies and T.I. However, the album feels too short. It brings great energy from start to finish, but it leaves you wanting much more. Hopefully, this 14-track release won’t be all fans will hear from Usher for another two years.
Usher, my friend, you have returned.
Near flawless return
