Replacement windows save energy in residence halls

The new apartments on 10th street are not the only residential buildings with special treatment this year.

Several IU buildings have been renovated, a fix up that has left some with new energy efficient windows.

Larry Isom, facilities management director for Residential Programs and Services, said the new windows are part of a renovation process that has already served Willkie Quad and Campus View apartments. Currently, Eigenmann Hall is enjoying the makeover.

The windows will be installed in three phases. The south wing’s west elevation and the west wing’s south elevation have already been completed.

In April, the west wing’s north elevation and the north wing’s east and west elevations will be redone.

The final phase will cover the east wing’s north and south elevation and the south wing’s east elevation.

In addition, Isom said new exterior doors have replaced the ones at Eigenmann.

“It makes the building look 200 percent better,” he said.

Isom said the new windows were replaced because the older windows were not thermal and have single panes. The old windows leaked and Isom said it was time for them to be replaced. The new windows will be thermal and help save energy.

“The windows are tinted, which will help save on air conditioning,” he said.

Briscoe Quad is next, a project that Isom said will be started this summer.
