McRobbie announces new vice president for research

Jorge José was named the University’s Vice President for Research by IU President Michael McRobbie. The selection will go to the IU board of trustees for approval.

José was recommended by a 16-member search committee lead by Distinguished Professor Michael Wade, associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs.

As Vice President for Research, José would be responsible for research development, compliance and administration. He would also work to increase, diversify and attract funding for research and creative works at IU. He would develop public-private partnerships, technology transfers and graduate education opportunities.

“I was attracted to this position because of Indiana University’s distinguished academic history and reputation for being one of the major research universities in the nation, as well as for its important seminal contributions in research and creative scholarly work, and its teaching and public service,” José said in an IU press release.

José is currently Vice President for Research at the University at Buffalo, which is the largest of 64 campuses in the State University of New York system. This campus is a member of the Association of American Universities, which is comprised of the nation’s top 60 research universities, including IU.

He is also a professor of physics and a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“Dr. José is a distinguished scientist, accomplished research scholar and skillful administrator who will ensure that Indiana University continues to strengthen its research profile and maximize external funding support for its core research activities in these challenging economic times,” McRobbie said in the release.

The interim vice president for research is School of Informatics and Computing Dean Robert Schnabel, who has served in this position since July 2009.
