Released as a hip-hop album, “Survival Story” fails to live up to its expectations following Flobots’ previous hit album, “Fight with Tools.”
Blending together a wide range of sounds, the musicality of “Survival Story” is surprisingly complex, although it fails to go the extra distance to make it a great album instead of just good.
The major disappointment of “Survival Story” is the rhymes that lead vocalist Jonny 5 spits throughout the album. His verses are nothing compared to the likes of Lil Wayne or Kanye, although he does make a good attempt.
Fortunately, this album isn’t all bad. Through his lyrics, Jonny 5 addresses issues of the troubled world economy as well as global warming. These politically charged lyrics present a message of peace, cleanliness and happiness which is a very admirable accomplishment, especially these days.
“Survival Story” also comes across as a boundary-breaking album. Inside of every track is a mess of different sounds pulled from a wide variety of genres. For example, classical instruments are featured as heavy distorted guitar riffs play in the background.
