The perfect winter sport for those who just want to hibernate indoors

Similar to the actual Olympics in name only – minus the prefix – and in the fact that there are “events,” Bar Olympics consists of at least three but as many as hundreds of games that all take place in bars, preferably in the slummiest dive bar in your town.

There are a few essential events to Bar Olympics, namely darts, pool and one of those computer touchscreen games, simply because most bar owners deemed these three games as the best distractions for their inebriated clientele.

Side note: Bars have long since abandoned the “Cheers” ethic of good conversation and interesting people being all you need for a fun(ny) night at the bar, and this game can definitely help make up for some of the socializing that’s been lost.

At least two people are on a team and there are as many teams as needed. Everyone must play at least one event, and no one can play more than half the events, unless you only play three events. Events can be played in singles or doubles as necessary.

Start with a game of billiards: eight-ball, nine-ball or cutthroat. Move on to darts: cricket or around the clock. The computer touch screen game will give you plenty of options, including a Wheel of Fortune-type game and a memory game, but the game of choice is the nudey match game. Try to beat your opponent and double your points by getting the high score. Losers buy, winners drink.

Foosball can be found at Yogi’s Grill & Bar or Q Billiards Cafe. If you find yourself at the Video Saloon, you can include the original Hoop Shot; score 50 and the next game is free. Golden Tee, a golfing video game, is another possible option.

There are drinking games of course: flippy cup, beer pong, fastest beer chug. Or try making your own combination of games, like sweatpants break dance or the ham sandwich marathon.
