Stormy skies ahead

forecast

Despite the possibility for greatness, the third album from indie-punker The Forecast is mediocre at best.

“Illinois” is one of the better songs, with its fast-moving guitars and robust voice. Lead singer Dustin Addis is successful in creating a sound usually reserved for slower songs. By extending the normal length of each note in a song with rapid rhythm, the whole tone is elevated to have a soaring and strong but breathy feel.

However, whereas the fusion of Americana and rock provides an engaging sound on “Illinois,” the group unfortunately leans more toward emo with the “I’ll Set You Free.”
Technically, as in all of the songs, “I’ll Set You Free” is quite good. Loud chorus portions are interspersed with softer bits, and the interplay of percussion and guitar works perfectly. But sadly, the song sounds like any other whiny band trying to connect to America’s seemingly rebellious youth.

Though this self-titled release contains all the right ingredients, its potential is ultimately unlived.
