Jo-Bro no more

nickolai

Upon listening to Nick Jonas’s newest solo album, “Who I Am,” it’s understandable why one might be a little confused. Jonas, best known for being the lead singer of The Jonas Brothers, has shed his boy-band persona and replaced it with an edgier, more mature sound.

“Who I Am” sounds more like a John Mayer album than anything produced by a Disney star. With a full band backing him up, Jonas proves that he’ll definitely be around for a while.

Although his voice isn’t the strongest, it’s nice to see Nick channel his inner rock star and break away from the generic pop sound that usually characterizes Jo-Bro music. His lyrics, however, never seem to get too deep. On “Tonight,” Nick croons to a lover and pleads that they stop fighting, while “Who I Am” has him asking if he will ever find someone who loves him for who he is.

While it’s nothing ground-breaking, “Who I Am” is a refreshing effort that solidifies Nick Jonas’s place in the music business while expanding his already large fan base.
