Choi to discuss ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Dan Choi will talk about his experience of being gay in the military at 7 p.m. today in the Indiana Memorial Union’s Alumni Hall.

Choi was an Arabic linguist and an Iraq War veteran and served in the military for almost 10 years before announcing he was gay in March.

Choi and 37 other West Point graduates announced they were gay earlier this year to protest the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which prohibits any member of the military from being openly homosexual or bisexual.

He is a part of “Knights Out,” an organization of West Point graduates who support the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender soldiers. Choi is now touring the country talking about his experience to help raise awareness about ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
