IU students using Umail experienced e-mail outages for more than an hour today during the second full day of classes.
As of Monday, 52,871 IU students were using Umail accounts, according to Dennis Cromwell, the IU associate vice president for enterprise infrastructure.
IU students were not alone in the outage. Users of Google's popular e-mail site were affected across the globe. On Twitter, the word "Gmail" quickly rocketed to the second most popular trending topic.
"We've fixed the issue, and Gmail should be back up and running as usual," , wrote on the Gmail blog after the outage. "We're still investigating the root cause of this outage."
Google reported outages around 3:53 p.m. The blog reported service had returned to normal at 5:37 p.m.
Gmail was the Internet's third most popular e-mail Web site behind Yahoo and Windows Live Mail in June, according to the ComScore Media Metrix.
