School of Informatics renamed

After a change in direction, a change of name was also in order to reflect the expansion of study at the IU School of Informatics, which has been re-named the School of Informatics and Computing.

The school was founded in 2000, the first of its kind in the U.S., with focuses on information technology, emphasizing societal implications of science. Since 2005, the school has had informatics and computer science programs, according to an IU press release.

The name change makes it more apparent that we are competitive with "peer institutions," Dean Bobby Schnabel said in a press release.

"The new name better depicts what we are as a school," he said in the release.

The name change became official July 1.
