Two indicted on charges found dead

ELKHART – The Elkhart County coroner said a woman found dead along with her husband after they were indicted on health care fraud and other charges died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

Coroner John White told the South Bend Tribune it appeared from evidence at the scene that 43-year-old Marcella Gabriele “was in agreement about her death.” He didn’t say what that evidence was.

She and her husband, Dr. Philip Gabriele, were found dead in their Elkhart eye clinic Monday. His death was ruled a suicide.

The 44-year-old ophthalmologist was accused of performing unnecessary surgeries, including some on children, from 2004 to 2009. His wife was accused of changing patient records afterward to justify the surgeries.
