IU alumnus Kyle Simcoe will be remembered as a passionate and outgoing person.
Simcoe, an Evansville native, was killed by a moving vehicle following a robbery in Dallas on May 9.
Grant McCoy, a 2008 IU graduate, said the funeral last weekend represented the many lives he influenced.
“There was a sheer volume of people. Young people from across the country flew in from Dallas and California to name a few,” McCoy said. “He was always in a good mood and the happiest person in pictures. Even in his six months of living in Dallas, he made more friends than I’ve made in my whole life. He was just that kind of person.”
Simcoe moved to Dallas after graduating in 2008 from the IU Kelley School of Business. The former Acacia Fraternity president was leaving downtown Dallas on May 9 when surveillance cameras recorded him getting into a pickup truck.
Dallas police investigators said Simcoe had made phone calls to find a ride home, and after not being able to get in touch with friends, approached the truck for a ride in exchange for money.
Surveillance cameras recorded the driver and passenger ejecting Simcoe from the truck and running over him as they fled the scene.
A motorist discovered Simcoe’s body in a parking lot and called police. A homeless man was found rifling through Simcoe’s pockets when investigators arrived at the scene.
“It’s amazing how low humanity can go,” Simcoe’s father said in a press conference.
Simcoe was pronounced dead May 10 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Two suspects were arrested and charged with capital murder May 13.
“The motive was robbery and the death intentional, but we are still investigating,” said Dallas police Sgt. Gene Reyes, a homicide supervisor.
“He was a fun guy and really loved life,” McCoy said. “He lived his life with such passion and always lived it to the fullest.”
