Indiana plans to bring its Journalism Hall of Fame to IU, the school of the original Hall of Fame member, Ernie Pyle.
On July 1, the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame will open in Ernie Pyle Hall, which is named after Pyle, who was an IU alumnus and Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II journalist.
The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame was founded in 1966 in Greencastle, Ind., at DePauw University. The Indiana chapter of the nationwide Society of Professional Journalists created the hall of fame, which has about 220 members.
The hall of fame was created to recognize and honor those individuals who have demonstrated throughout a number of years that they are journalists of the highest distinction and that their dedication and contribution to journalism have in turn contributed to the regard others have for journalism.
“The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame board is excited about the Hall being housed at one of the truly outstanding journalism schools in the nation,” said Ray Moscowitz, president of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame board in a press release.
During the past three years, the IU School of Journalism has increased its enrollment by more than 50 percent, currently with about 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. Since 1911, when the school was established, it has been considered a top program in journalism. The IU School of Journalism offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism as well as a doctoral program.
The School of Journalism will work together with the hall of fame to put on the annual induction ceremony and assemble displays honoring inductees and create educational material on the hall of fame and Indiana journalism history.
“Their goals match ours in many ways – to work with the best journalists and to teach about and celebrate the best in journalism,” said Brad Hamm, dean of the IU School of Journalism, in a press release. “We’re very proud to have the Hall of Fame come to Bloomington.”
