Teenage boy involved in January police shooting charged

The 16-year-old boy who was shot by a police officer in January has been charged with lunging at an officer with a knife.

The charges were formally filed Tuesday.

Officers responded to the downtown bus terminal Jan. 7 after receiving a call about someone with a knife. Later reports indicate that the phone call was made by the boy.

Bloomington Police Department John Coleman was the first to arrive on the scene. According to the report, Coleman spotted the 16 year old standing with his hands in his pockets, about 15 feet away. Coleman told the suspect to remove his hands from his pockets, according to the release.

The suspect charged at Coleman, who fired his weapon twice when the boy was within five feet of him, according to the release. Paramedic crews arrived on the scene after officers immediately called 911.

The boy underwent surgeries for two shots in his chest and abdomen. After an internal investigation, the City of Bloomington Board of Public Safety found officers involved to be in accordance with Bloomington Police Department policy.
