Kappa Delta sorority will begin the month by organizing its annual Shamrock 5K Run on Saturday.
The run will begin at 11 a.m. at Gate F of Memorial Stadium. This will be the second year the sorority will hold the event, which is open to the IU and Bloomington communities.
“The event went really well last year,” said sophomore Jillian Casamo, vice president of public relations for Kappa Delta. “We had great support from the greek and Bloomington community.”
Last year, the sorority raised more than $5,000, which contributed to the sorority’s national charity, Prevent Child Abuse America.
Participants are able to register online at kdshamrock.blogspot.com or at 10 a.m. on the day of the event. The registration fee is $10 by today at midnight or $12 at the run.
“Each year, I believe that the Shamrock 5K Run will get bigger and bigger,” junior and Kappa Delta member Stephanie Switzer said. “It’s just neat to see the Bloomington community and the campus get together to support a good cause.”
Apart from the run, participants can enjoy other entertainment at the event. There will be a costume contest for the best shamrock outfit as well as a performance from IDentity Irish Dancers. Local disc jockey DJ Wild Child will also provide music throughout the day.
“I like being asked to do these events because it benefits a great cause,” DJ Wild Child said. “I support what the greek philanthropies do.”
Representatives from Prevent Child Abuse America and Girl Scouts of America will also be present at the event.
“I’m hoping for a bigger turnout this year,” said junior Kate Buckey, Shamrock chair. “We hope there is more participation from the campus and the community.”
