The IU Student Association is encouraging students to take precautionary measures while traveling to Mexico during spring break.
IUSA is backing the U.S. Department of State’s warning of an escalated level of violence in Mexico due to government efforts to curb drug trafficking.
Though the University is not releasing an advisory for students, senior and IUSA President Luke Fields said IUSA is the government and advocate of the student body. The organization is the perfect forum to support student safety, he said.
They have taken this stance due to the Department of State’s warning of violence on and around the U.S. border.
The Department of State’s Web site advises citizens to travel on main roads during the day, to travel with others and to leave an itinerary with a family member or friend.
Fields said students should take the State Department’s advisory seriously.
“IUSA is a great organization to look out for students,” Fields said. “There are very few organizations that deal with issues of the student body and make issues public.”
