The Winter Wonder Hike, sponsored by Sycamore Land Trust and Bloomington Parks and Recreation, was postponed until Saturday, Feb. 28.
At 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sycamore Land Trust’s Environmental Education Coordinator Carroll Ritter decided the weather was simply too severe to allow the hike to continue as planned.
“I was driving through pouring rain, wet snow and poor visibility,” Ritter said. “Herb Hoover, the owner of Yellowwood Farm, said the conditions at the site were quite nasty.”
The hike will now be held this weekend at the same time and place. Thirty participants will explore a one-mile loop trail through the fields and forests of Yellowwood Farm.
Sycamore Land Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving Indiana’s natural habitat and wildlife. It now manages 5,500 acres in 26 different counties across the southern half of Indiana.
Through outreach efforts such as this weekend’s hike, the organization aims to engage young people in the science and history of Indiana’s natural environment.
“Next Saturday is supposed to be much better,” Ritter said. “It’s hard to win sometimes, but I hope most folks will be able to give it another try.”
