Rec Sports offers lifeguard certification classes

Lifeguards still play a role at IU

Junior lifeguard Patrick Rud on duty Tuesday afternoon in the Royer Swimming Pool in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building. Recreational Sports will be hosting two Red Cross training sessions for certification to become a lifeguard.

Although there are no oceans or white, sandy beaches on campus, lifeguards still play a huge role in aquatic life at IU.

Whether working at the Student Recreational Sports Center or School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the lifeguard staff consists of individuals who are willing to learn safety-training procedures and provide quality guard time for students and patrons who use the campus pools.

The Recreational Sports Program hires lifeguards for fall, spring and summer semesters, usually employing a staff of about 40 lifeguards.

“We stress a team atmosphere and good communication while also trying to accommodate to our student lifeguard staff’s schedules,” said Kellen Edelbrock, interim assistant director for Aquatics.

Edelbrock explained most student lifeguards work eight to 10 hours a week, and before being hired they must complete a training course that certifies them in Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED.

The certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid expires every three years, and the CPR/AED certification expires every year.

Edelbrock also said more than half of the staff has some swim experience.

Senior lifeguard Ashley Seeger has been a lifeguard for seven years, the last two years at IU.

Seeger said it is very rare for any major rescues to occur.

“The job may be uneventful at times, but know that people’s lives are in your hands and you could potentially have life-threatening moments,” she said.

Seeger said after the initial certification course, the staff has monthly in-services where the lifeguards practice scenarios and go over their basic training skills.

Freshman Cali Keith applied for a lifeguard position in August upon her arrival at IU.

“It is nice because they schedule your work schedule around your school schedule, and it is fun and easy while also giving you a motive to stay in shape,” Keith said.

Recreational Sports is hosting two American Red Cross lifeguard-training courses that are $75 for members and students and $90 for non-members.

These courses will offer basic certification in CPR/AED, first aid, preventing disease transmission, spinal management, recognizing life-threatening situations and emergency action planning.

“If you are up for a new and exciting challenge, come and check out our lifeguard qualifications,” Edelbrock said. ”Not only is it a great opportunity, but also a great way to learn applicable skills that could make you able to help out in a situation where life-saving assistance is needed.”
