Three Indiana state highway workers found $130,120 in cash inside a tire along Interstate 70 on Friday afternoon.
Indiana State Police were called at 1:36 p.m. Friday when the highway workers said they were picking up old tires and debris along the Interstate when one tire fell apart and a large amount of cash fell out. Indiana State Police Detective Mitch Blocher said the money was wet and had to be dried before the total amount of cash could be counted.
Indiana State Police said the money was packaged the way drug money is packaged, and the money might have been alongside the highway for quite some time.
In a press release Monday, police said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has taken control of the money. State police said in the release that this is an active criminal investigation and no further information will be released until arrests are made.
