A columnist's audacity

I was both stunned and outraged after reading the opinion article called “Praise for anti-Zionism.”  As an optimist, I believed that the time of bigotry toward race and religion has been long extinguished in this country.

After reading this article, however, I have received a rude awakening, realizing that there are still some people who believe in outdated principles. On one hand, it takes a certain amount of serious audacity by this columnist to write an article based on this material.

It is ridiculous to even suggest that America stop aiding Israel, an ally that has been plagued with war and terrorism since its origination in 1948. America has made it a moral point to always assist in international matters if they are asked or called upon.

Should we stop supporting the end of the genocide in Darfur because we are wasting money? Or perhaps we should just retract our participation in the United Nations all together.

Also, it is particularly astonishing to hear a columnist, who is supposed to write professionally, talk about a monopoly Jews have on God.  

As a Jew, I am personally offended and disappointed that a fellow student has the nerve to publicly ridicule an entire group of people, not to mention create a negative reputation for a usually well-written periodical. With that said, it is also an outrage that the editor of this paper would even allow this opinion to be posted. Not only is it unprofessional, it is outright despicable.

I was brought up, both as a student and a human being, to believe in fairness and equality. It is utterly upsetting to see that some individuals in this country, one that is based on morality and democracy, have the gall to humiliate a large population of this student body.

I can only hope that our next president will continue to support Israel in the way they deserve to be supported: with the utmost aid and respect.
