Man arrested after firing 2 shots while driving, police say

A man was arrested Sunday morning after he fired two shots from a handgun after he was cut off while driving.

No one was injured.

Donovan J. Jones, 19, of Indianapolis, faces preliminary charges of possession of a handgun without a permit, intimidation and criminal recklessness, said Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Jeff Canada, reading from a police report.

Jones and three acquaintances were leaving a National Guard Armory dance at about 3 a.m. in a white Cutlass when a car pulled out in front of them in the area of Burks Drive and Walnut Street Pike, Canada said. Jones followed the car closely, then pulled in front of the car and stopped.

The 36-year-old male and a 28-year-old-male in the other car got out of their vehicles and exchanged words, Canada said. Jones then pointed the gun out the window and fired at least two shots, according to the police report.

The two men told police that Jones fired the shots at them. Jones admitted to police that he fired the shots, but claimed he shot them into the air.

Jones then left the scene and dumped the gun by storage units on Winslow Road and Walnut Street Pike, according to the police report. When police questioned Jones’ acquaintances, they told police they had no part in it and did not know that Jones had a gun. The acquaintances told police where the gun was dropped, Canada said.
Police found the gun and shell casings at the site of the shooting.
