After a July lockout in Eigenmann Hall, IU administrators announced Wednesday the First Nations Education and Cultural Center will move to a new location in Weatherly Hall in Ashton Center.
"The FNECC is a key part of the diversity initiatives at Indiana University," said Edwin Marshall, university vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural affairs, in a press release. "Its success is important not only for Native students, faculty and staff, but for the entire IU Bloomington community."
The term First Nations refers to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian peoples.
The FNECC, established in April 2007, was temporarily housed in Eigenmann Hall after the flood. On July 24, the keys and locks for the centers rooms were changed. The center's volunteer student board resigned Aug. 4, according to an Aug. 6 Indiana Daily Student article.
In addition to the move, IU administrators hope to appoint a part-time interim director, hire two-work study students, develop a resource center, form a new advisory board and work with the admissions office to increase Native American enrollment, according to the press release.
The center will remain on the sixth floor of Eigenmann Hall until the move into the Ashton center.
