Mold found on 11 FEMA trailers

The Federal Emergency Management Agency discovered mold on 11 manufactured homes during a routine maintenance check Saturday, said Rachel Meyer, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

The homes were all in southern Indiana and were provided by FEMA to victims of the flooding that took place in the area in early June. A substance, determined to be mold after initial testing, was found on the doors and doorjambs of exterior water heater compartments, according to a press release issued by FEMA. FEMA representatives could not be reached for comment.

“As far as I know, mold was only found on the outside of units,” Meyer said. “The state health department is inspecting the inside immediately.”

FEMA has made alternative forms of housing available and will be cleaning up all existing mold, according to the press release.

“The mold found by FEMA is on the outside of the manufactured homes, so there does not appear to be an immediate health concern,” said State Board of Health Commissioner Judy Monroe, M.D., in a press release. “The Indiana State Department of Health is working closely with FEMA to evaluate the manufactured home units, address any mold found and ensure the continued health and safety of those living in those units.”
