No debate needed for gay marriage

In Robert Granger’s column on April 11 (“Politics, never right”), he makes a well-reasoned point that there are certainly multiple dimensions to the issue of marriage rights for GLBTQ Americans. But he overlooks something crucial: Denying the right of same-sex couples to marry is quite simply un-American. “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal.” (Declaration of Independence) The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that all U.S. citizens are equal under the law, and since marriage is a status recognized by law, it only stands to reason that same-sex marriage is a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Opponents of same-sex marriage are deliberately attempting to deprive United States citizens of their liberty. Liberty, by the way, being an “inalienable right (...) endowed by (the) Creator.” So if you truly believe in American values, or indeed in Judeo-Christian values, there is simply no debate on whether same-sex marriage should be legal.
