No room for sob story

I took issue with the article “IU admission standards increase” printed in the March 3 paper for a very obvious reason. Students don’t have a low G.P.A. because they do poorly in one class. I would love to see Ms. Rickards’ “outstanding” grades which apparently weren’t enough to pull up her grade in math. It is called a grade point average for a reason. If you want to write an article denouncing the University’s new admission standards, fine. But don’t use some sob story about a girl who didn’t work hard enough to insinuate that IU is making a mistake. Instead, you can use some facts and figures or even give a strong opinion like, “This University was founded with the notion that it would provide the opportunity for all Indiana residents to receive a quality, affordable education. The new admission standards do not honor the University’s original intent.” That would be much better than having to read about a high school student who couldn’t get into IU through, apparently, no fault but her own.
