Students who frequent the Student Recreational Sports Center will be greeted by a different facility than the one they are used to when they return from winter break. \nThe SRSC will be closed from Dec. 15 to Jan. 5 for the professional staff to rearrange gym equipment and perform routine maintenance, said IU Recreational Sports Publicity Assistant and Indiana Daily Student reporter Kim Cullman. \n“We are trying to make it a better environment for participants,” she said. “We are trying to move stuff around so it’s not as intimidating, especially for people who don’t come to the gym as often.”\nCullman said many of the changes being made stem from participant comments and the SRSC’s professional staff’s concerns. Some of the cardio equipment will be moved to what is currently the weight lifting room, and some of the weight lifting equipment will be moved to the existing cardio room. By integrating the weight and cardio machines more, the SRSC hopes to make the facility more user-friendly. Additional stretching areas will also be created.\nIn an effort to better familiarize users with the weight machines, weight lifting equipment will be reorganized in the gym.\n“We’ve heard a lot of complaints that it’s difficult to determine which weights work which muscles, so we are going to put them all together and put up signs all around the gym,” Cullman said. \nOne of the most common complaints heard from participants is about the hip adductor and hip abductor machines in the main cardio room, Cullman said. The machines, which are currently in the middle of the cardio room, will be moved closer to the wall for more privacy.\nThe Health, Physical Education and Recreation building will remain open during the holiday. SRSC membership-holders will be able to use their pass to exercise at HPER.
