Hearsay: the torture debate

You quote APA President Sharon Brehm to the effect that if the American Psychological Association catches any member in violation of its position on torture, the association will kick that member out, as a result of which the former member “ . . . may not be able to make a living anymore. It is that basic.” Back in the day when I belonged, APA membership was not a condition of employment as a psychologist or anything else. Have I missed something? Incidentally, readers may want to investigate another APA President, a Canadian named Donald O. Hebb , whose ground-breaking research on sensory deprivation, applied wholesale in Guantanamo and other such places, was supported by the C.I.A. in the 1950s.
