Students get rowdy at ‘Yell Like Hell’

Skit contest boosts spirit before weekend events

Hoosier spirit filled Alumni Hall as student groups from across campus gathered for “Yell Like Hell,” performing songs, skits, dances and anything downright silly to hype up the student body for Homecoming. \nSponsored by the Student Alumni Association, Yell Like Hell is a homecoming-spirit competition between groups of students with the ultimate goal of winning the overall Homecoming competition, said Phillip Blomeke, vice president of special events for the SAA.\nThis free event was held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The event featured three-minute performances from various organizations, including a capella groups Ladies First and Straight No Chaser, who take part in the event every year, Blomeke said. \n“It gives us a chance to try out new material and have a good time,” said senior Andrew Landau, business manager for Straight No Chaser. “We know the crowd is always packed.” \nStraight No Chaser and Ladies First performed at the end while judges deliberated. \n“We generally like to keep it upbeat,” Landau said. “It’s the time of year where we are trying to get people excited for Homecoming. We save the ballads for the big shows and keep the upbeat songs for this.” \nApart from listening to the two groups and watching the various performances, there are other ways SAA tries to get students involved. \n“We also do a raffle in between acts in which students can win gift certificates and different things,” Blomeke said. “It’s a really great event.” \nThe competition is open to any group of students and it is free to register. \n All skits include a theme relating to or focused on Homecoming, football, IU, the Hoosiers vs. Penn State football game or this year’s “Rock the House” Homecoming theme. Judgements were based upon originality, appearance, including costumes and props, and crowd response. \nYell Like Hell is part of the overall Homecoming competition, in which groups collect points from various other activities including the parade, Window and Banner, and painting corn hole boards for the campus wide celebration.
