Editor of The Nation to speak at J-School

Discussion will focus on today’s news media

Some of the most influential members of the political media will visit IU today to discuss the state of news media.\nThe IU School of Journalism will host a panel discussion with Katrina Vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation; Stephen F. Cohen, a contributing editor to The Nation, author and IU graduate; and Julia Fox, a professor of telecommunications at IU. The discussion will focus on media’s victories and shortcomings. Titled “What’s Right and Wrong with the Media?”, the lecture will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today in Ernie Pyle Hall Room 220. The discussion will be moderated by assistant professor Mike Conway and is sponsored by the IU School of Journalism and The Nation magazine, which is the oldest weekly news magazine in the country.\nSchool of Journalism Director of Communications Beth Moellers said The Nation magazine has visited a number of college campuses and IU is one in a series.\n“I’m hoping to expect thoughtful discussion on the topic of what’s right and wrong, but focus on what’s right and how we can do more good for the public service that journalism offers,” she said. \nConway has developed numerous questions to ask the panel, hoping to give IU students a diverse and helpful experience. Each panel member will have six minutes to talk, and Conway will then focus his questions in the direction the conversation has gone. After about 20 minutes of Conway’s questioning, the panelists will take questions from the audience. \nFor more information on this year’s School of Journalism lecture series, visit www.journalism.indiana.edu.
