Amanda Lowry, your May 24 column, “Memoirs of Jerry Falwell,” did the man well-deserved justice in my opinion. However your apologetics on behalf of evangelical Christians seems to me to be an attempt to distance them from that clown now that he is gone.\nYou assert, “The majority of evangelicals didn’t even associate their movement with him in the first place: They considered him as a phony.” You, however, fail to document that assertion. Can you cite a poll or a study to support what you say?\nIf evangelicals have made their bed with Falwell, Dobson, Robertson and Bush in the past, now that American opinion in regard to that crowd appears to be changing, evangelicals should not to be allowed to simply deny away that past allegiance.
