Final grades to be delivered over Internet for first time

Instead of receiving final grades in the postal mail this semester, the Office of the Registrar has announced students will be getting their grades over the Internet.\nBecause of growing student demand, students will now receive notice of their grades by e-mail. Students will be required to provide their network ID and password to the IU Central Authentication Service, where the grades will be encrypted and placed in a secure environment, according to an Office of the Registrar press release.\n"We have received student feedback at increasing volumes within the last couple years to have more business done on the Internet," Registrar employee Bart Quinet said. Quinet said the online grade notifications will make final grades available a week earlier than the paper copies sent through the mail.\nIn the past, parents have not had access to their students' grades, and that won't be any different with the new system. \n"Parents didn't have access to grades when they were being mailed because they were mailed to the student," Quinet said. "They have the same choice now. If their parents want to see them, the child can open it up and print it off or show them on the screen."\nSenior Natalie Hall said she thinks the online access can create problems for parents.\n"I just think that everything being online can be very complicated for the parents who may not be as computer-savvy as the students are," she said.\nOn the other hand, senior Jordan Chelovich said she liked the change because her parents wouldn't be able to see it. Junior Josh Moyer said he agrees. \n"I'm pretty impartial to it, other than the fact that my parents can't see my grades," he said\nIf students have any specific questions concerning their final term grade notification, they can contact the Office of the Registrar by e-mail at registrar@indiana.edu or by phone at 855-0121.
