UPDATE: Hoosiers pull off road win against Illini

IU kicker hits 33-yard field goal with one second remaining

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- In dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon, the IU football team claimed a 34-32 victory over Illinois on a last-second field goal from sophomore kicker Austin Starr.\nWith just 2:31 remaining in the game, the Hoosiers got the ball back from the Illini. Freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis took IU 80 yards downfield to give Starr a chance to win the game.\nLewis completed five of six passes on the last drive and finished the game 20-39 with 240 passing yards and 56 yards rushing.\nPrior to the late game heroics, IU looked sluggish in falling behind early.\nAfter Illinois scored on its first drive, the Hoosiers marched down the field on a four-play, 76-yard drive. Lewis capped off the possession with a two-yard touchdown run to even the score at seven early in the first quarter.\nThe Illini would score on their next four drives -- two touchdowns and two field goals -- to extend their lead to 25-7 with just less than 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Illinois failed to make two-point conversions on its second and third touchdowns.\nOn its first drive of the second quarter, sophomore running back Marcus Thigpen ran back the kick-off 60 yards, giving the Hoosiers excellent field position in Illinois territory.\nTaking advantage, the Hoosiers scored their second touchdown of the day on a 2-yard run from junior fullback Josiah Sears, cutting the deficit to 25-14.\nAfter holding the Illini offense in check, IU continued the momentum shift, notching its third score of the game on Sears' second touchdown run of the day. With Starr's PAT, IU pulled within four points at 25-21.\nOn the opening kick-off of the second half, Thigpen ran the ball back 98 yards for a touchdown, giving the Hoosiers their first lead of the game at 28-25. The kick-off return for a touchdown was Thigpen's third this season.\nLate in the third quarter, Starr kicked his first field goal of the day, a 23-yard kick giving IU a six-point advantage.\nDuring its next drive after a 44-yard dash from Illini running back Pierre Thomas, Illinois ran a double reverse with receiver DaJuan Warren connecting with Jody Ellis for the touchdown completion. Junior kicker Jason Reda's PAT gave the Illini the lead at 32-31.\nAfter an unsuccessful drive to open the fourth quarter, senior linebacker Casey Nowinski recovered a fumble from Illini running back E.B Halsey. Unable to convert a third and nine, the Hoosiers turned to Starr for the field goal, but the sophomore missed a 33-yard attempt wide left.\nThen, in the final minutes of the game, the Hoosiers got one more chance. Lewis led the team downfield and was able to spike the ball with just one second remaining after a completion to freshman receiver Nick Polk. Starr came onto the field with a chance to make up for the earlier miss and hit a 33-yard field goal to give IU its first Big Ten victory this season and its first road victory in conference since 2001.\nThe victory evened up IU's season record at 3-3 with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
